Rafe Mair says goodbye

As we mourn the passing of a legend and dear friend, Rafe Mair’s own word’s in 2011 at his 80th Birthday Roast serve as a fitting goodbye from a man who was ahead of his time and never stopped fighting for the people and environment he loved so dearly. In the coming days and weeks, we will share more video and recollections of Rafe.

Rafe was a fierce, uncompromising spirit with a deep sense of justice and unlimited reservoir of courage for speaking truth to power. He leaves behind a prolific legacy of accomplishments in government, journalism, and environmental advocacy.

He loved his wife Wendy, his family, chocolate labs, fly fishing, jazz, and Winston Churchill, whose words were his mantra: “Never give in–never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.”

He was a British Columbian through and through. He loved this place – its mountains, rivers, wild salmon, and independent spirit – and gave every ounce of his soul to defending it. He will be deeply missed by this publication and its co-founder and publisher, Damien Gillis, as he will by so many people whom he informed, entertained and inspired over a long, rich life.

Thank you, Rafe, and may you rest in peace.

It was no surprise that the semi-annual gathering of retired B.C. broadcasters and journalists spearheaded by Red Robinson this week opened with a heart-warming salute to Rafe, who normally occupied the seat at the front of the room with his loving wife Wendy. He truly was there in spirit and forever will be.

I’ll repeat what I said at the Tyee: I think resting in peace would be a kind of personal hell for Rafe. I would think that he is stirring things up, wherever he is.

Rafe, you were one of the few public figures I always looked up to and admired.

Your wit, intelligence, eloquence and spirit were a very rare blend indeed and made you that much more appreciated in a world of politically correct doublespeak.

You will be missed by family, friends and by thousands upon thousands of people who never had the honor of meeting you.

My only hope is…. someday, where ever you are, we will meet.

A man without fear of retribution for calling a spade a spade and with a solid moral compass, I for one always looked forward to your next dose of common sense offered to those seeking editorial commentary unsold.

Sometime… well let’s face it, most times brash, your style was one of kind.

Thank you for shouting out the truth Rafe!

    RIP good Sir
